Defending champions Auckland City made a perfect start of their 2015
Fiji Airways OFC Champions League campaign with an impressive 3-0 win over All Freight Logistics Suva in the opening match at ANZ Stadium in Suva on Saturday, April 11.
The Ramon Tribulietx-coached side settled well early in the match as
they displayed a quality football despite having some of the senior
players including captain Ivan Vicelich on starting-off on bench.
David Browne scored the opener for City in the 11th minute through a
penalty after Suva defender Kolinio Sivoki fouled striker Oscar Garcia
inside the box.
Suva’s under-20 marksman Nickel Chand displayed some good footwork and
floated-in some neat crosses, however the strikers failed to capitalize
as City led 1-0 at the breather.
Local import Rusiate Matarereqa had the best chance to score for Suva in
the second half, but he could not finish it off after beating goalkeeper
Tamati Williams as it was cleared away from the foot of Matarereqa by
the City defender.
City substitutes Sam Burfoot and Adam McGeorge made their presence felt
in the second half as they came off the bench and scored a goal each to
ensure the maximum points for City from their first group match.
Auckland City coach Ramon Tribulietx was satisfied with the outcome and
said Suva made them work hard to win.
“It was really a difficult game as we only managed to score in the
second half,” said Tribulietx.
“Suva played defensively well and made things really difficult for us.
“Playing against the home side as they are very motivated in front of
their home fans was difficult for us, but I’m happy that we were able to
win the game.”
Suva coach Gurjit Singh said the boys played well against one of the
best team and few errors in the second half costed them the game.
“I think overall we played a good game as we were very well organised in
the first half and unfortunately the penalty turned things around,”
Singh said.
“We started losing ball possessions in the second half and that’s where
City utilized their chances.
“Nevertheless, it was a good experience as for the first time the boys
played against one of the best teams.”
Auckland City battles Western United in their second game at 4.30pm on
Tuesday while Suva meets Amicale FC at 7pm.
Meanwhile, in other matches played on the same day, last season’s
finalist Amicale FC edged Cummins Menapi’s Western United 1-0 while at
Govind Park, AS Pirae held Lupe Ole Soaga 3-3 while Ba recorded an
impressive 3-0 victory over newcomers FC Gaitcha.
