Referee assaulted, league suspended

FSLGV President Nadraj Nair FSLGV President Nadraj Nair A Fijian Soccer League of Greater Vancouver referee received injuries after he was allegedly attacked at a game on Sunday.


Surrey police were called at the North Surrey Oval about the possible assault that happened during the Masters Division fixture between Tailevu Naitasiri and Labasa.

A credible source to Sportsone identified Tailevu Naitasiri player, Mohammed Imtiaz Khan as the offender.

"When the officers arrived they found the referee, a young man hurt an on the ground".

The source said paramedics attended to the man and he was taken to hospital.

A teammate of Khan who witnessed the altercation unfold said Khan had already copped a yellow card and when the referee booked him for another foul he retaliated.

Khan may face criminal charges.

FSLGV president Nadraj Nair says its discipline committee will hold a hearing on Sunday into the alleged attack.

"The FSLGV does want to ensure due process is followed but we are clear that we don’t tolerate violence on the playing field".

Nair said "appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the accused party."

The FSLGV has suspended the league indefinitely as referees are said to be holding out for safety and security reasons.

"The referees have requested safety for its members. And as a league we will do just that".

The teams need to take over the league as they're too many chiefs and not enough Indians or is there !!!
