BRISBANE, Australia youngster Maqil Mohammed is making waves in an unlikely sport.
Maqil is turning heads in rugby.
Just a few years ago, Maqil was a passionate footballer, who tried to emulate his older brother, Brisbane Roar Academy standout Mustafa Mohammed.
But after Mustafa’s tumultuous experience with the Fiji U20 national team, the youngster took a decision to take up rugby.
Mustafa broke the ranks after being treated unfairly by coach Ronil Lal and Fiji Football Association, for playing favourites.
“I just wanted out, it was rugby,” said Maqil.
“The beautiful game that football is, isn’t so in Fiji, I got disheartened that’s all to it”.
With only 2-years into rugby head coach Narnz [Jo] Tangatakere inspired Maqil excelled in the sport.
The 13- year old scored tries seemingly at will, and became the Logan Rugby Club’s star athlete on the rise.
And last week the young rugger won the club’s Rising Star Award in the U13 age group.
“An exceptional player, plays with a lot of passion, pride, respect and integrity.
“Wears the club on his sleeves and gives everything he has, proves everything is possible if you work hard,” coach Tangatakere said during the club’s awards ceremony.
Tangatakere believes with Maqil’s strong desire a bright rugby career lies ahead.
The prodigy aspires to become a professional rugby player, eyes set to play in the National Rugby League and go on to represent Australia.
